Humanities and History

You will find a wealth of background information in the Development of the Paralympic Games and Sir Ludwig Guttmann sections to help you and the students with investigations into Modern World History, Hitler and the rise of the Nazis, Britain’s changing world role or Medicine and Public Health through time, for example.

Taking each decade at a time, the students could trace and cite evidence for the development of Guttmann’s ground-breaking work in the treatment of spinal injuries, and relate this to what was happening in Germany and Europe at the time.

Some students may be interested in investigating the key role that Stoke Mandeville played in the treatment and rehabilitation of injured servicemen during World War Two, and the work it is still doing to support injured service personnel serving in Afghanistan, for example.

The Mandeville Legacy project is working with nine other organisations across the South East who are keen to develop their collections relating to disability and rehabilitation.  Take a look at the Projects section of the website to see summaries of these projects and their work so far.
