The Mandeville Legacy project aims to ensure that Buckinghamshire’s role as the birthplace of the Paralympic movement is recognised by the world, and that the archives held at Stoke Mandeville are explored.  It is led by Buckinghamshire County Council, working with Wheelpower: British Wheelchair Sport, the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS), the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, and the Bucks Legacy Programme.

We have 4 main objectives

  • To support the development of sustainable regional, national and international partnerships to develop the archive collections at Stoke Mandeville.
  • To research the story of disability and rehabilitation in the region, including the pioneering role of Stoke Mandeville and other key regional institutions.
  • To foster public understanding of the story of disability in the region, by involving young people and others in a range of interpretive and creative activities.
  • To develop and improve access, both physical and intellectual, to the relevant museum, archive and library collections.

Mandeville Legacy and Accentuate

Mandeville Legacy was part of Accentuate, a transformational programme of 15 projects which sought to change perceptions and offer opportunities to showcase the talents of deaf and disabled people.   Accentuate was funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK.

Heritage Lottery Fund

Mandeville Legacy included an oral history project that interviewed past and present Paralympians.  This project, called 'Paralympic Voices' was supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and the results of this work can be seen throughout this site.

You can find out more about projects that have been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund by visiting their website: http://www.hlf.org.uk

Discovering Places

Mandeville Legacy was also supported by Discovering Places, the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad campaign to inspire the UK to discover their local built, historic and natural environments.  To find out more about Discovering Places at http://www.discoveringplaces.co.uk/
