WheelPower - British Wheelchair Sport was originally formed in 1972 as the British Paraplegic Sports Society. It was founded by Sir Ludwig Guttmann as an organisation to promote his vision for a worldwide sports movement for, initially, those with spinal injuries and now many other different types of disability. The BPSS were the lead organiser of the 1984 'Paralympic' Games at Stoke Mandeville. WheelPower continues to provide, promote and develop opportunities for disabled people to participate in recreational and competitive wheelchair sport including the Inter Spinal Unit Games for recently paralysed men and women and the National Junior Games in the UK for young people with disabilities. WheelPower are the owners of Stoke Mandeville Stadium where the charity is based.
